  • Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 by acclaimed directors Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki after the success of Miyazaki’s film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
  • The name “Ghibli” comes from an Italian word for a hot desert wind, reflecting Miyazaki’s love of Italian aircraft.
  • The studio is located in Koganei, Tokyo. Its famous logo features the character Totoro.

Films and Directors

  • Studio Ghibli is best known for acclaimed animated films like My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) and Ponyo (2008).
  • Several Ghibli films rank among the highest-grossing anime films worldwide, including Spirited Away which is the second highest.
  • Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata have been the most prominent directors at the studio, along with other directors like Yoshifumi Kondō, Hiroyuki Morita, and Hiromasa Yonebayashi.
  • Composer Joe Hisaishi has scored the music for most of the studio’s films.
  • The studio is known for the high quality of its animation and storytelling, and its focus on strong female protagonists.

International Distribution

  • Studio Ghibli had a partnership with Disney for international distribution rights from 1996 to 2017. Disney produced English dubs of the films.
  • In 2017, GKIDS acquired the North American distribution rights. The Ghibli films are now streamed on HBO Max in the US and on Netflix in most other countries.

Recent Developments

  • The studio went on a brief hiatus in 2014 after Miyazaki’s temporary retirement. It returned to production in 2017.
  • Miyazaki came out of retirement again to direct The Boy and the Heron which releases in 2023.
  • In 2023, Studio Ghibli became a subsidiary of Nippon TV with new leadership while Miyazaki and Suzuki transitioned to advisory roles.
  • The studio is renowned for not allowing edits to its films for international release. It also has a strict no-cut policy when licensing the films abroad.
